Essential Rights Every Child Deserves Without Question

Did you know that March marks Human Rights Month in South Africa? If this fact slipped under your radar, take a moment to pause and delve into its significance. You might assume that human rights are distant concepts, irrelevant to your daily life. However, they are deeply intertwined with our collective existence – touching each and every one of us.

Fundamental rights and freedoms are inherent to every human being on this planet. Working closely with children and families in diverse contexts, Give a Child a Family Africa (GCF) constantly confronts this reality. We witness firsthand the repercussions when these rights are compromised, particularly for the most vulnerable among us.

Children’s rights are an adaptation of human rights tailored to the unique needs and vulnerabilities of young individuals. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child underscores that every child deserves a nurturing family environment, access to education and healthcare, opportunities for play and development, and protection from harm and exploitation. Yet, a cursory glance at the global landscape reveals persistent violations of children’s rights.

In Africa, and notably in South Africa, misconceptions surrounding children’s rights abound. Some believe that recognising these rights fosters disobedience and disrupts familial harmony. However, the truth is quite the opposite. Acknowledging and upholding children’s rights cultivates positive growth, prepares them for the future, and instills a sense of responsibility from an early age.

Every child should be able to assert, without reservation:

“I have the right to grow up in a nurturing and supportive family environment, shielded from harm. And, I am responsible for reciprocating love, respect, and care within my family.”

“I have the right to access nutritious food, and I am accountable for minimising waste.”

“I have the right to quality education, and I am obliged to respect and learn from my teachers and peers.”

These statements encapsulate just a fraction of the rights and responsibilities children should be able to take for granted. However, the harsh reality is often far removed from this ideal.

Children arriving at GCF’s Child and Youth Care Centre have frequently endured neglect and abuse within their own families and communities. They may have been denied essential healthcare, nutrition, or education. When intervention becomes unavoidable, these children are removed from their homes, further depriving them of familial bonds. This complex issue underscores the urgent need for preventative measures within families and communities, aiming to fortify and restore familial structures and prevent institutionalisation.

You can support GCF in our mission to secure every child’s right to a stable, loving, and nurturing family environment by contributing financially. Through ongoing efforts, we strive to reunite children with their biological families and recruit and train Temporary Safe Care and Foster families.
