When our team began enrolling caregivers into the Parenting for Life programme in one of the communities we serve, we met a young mother whose circumstances immediately concerned us. She had recently relocated and was caring for her six-month-old baby in extremely vulnerable conditions, with very limited resources or support.
It was clear that both mother and child needed urgent assistance. The baby appeared underweight and unwell, and their living environment reflected the depth of hardship they were facing. As an organisation committed to prevention and family preservation, we knew that early intervention was critical.

Our community workers responded with compassion and practical support. The family received essential items, including clothing, toiletries, baby supplies, formula, and food parcels. More importantly, our team began regular follow-up visits — building trust, offering encouragement, and ensuring that both mother and child were not facing their challenges alone.
During these visits, concerns about the baby’s health prompted immediate action. Support was provided to access medical care, where the child was diagnosed with an illness and malnutrition. The mother also received necessary medical treatment. The baby was referred for further assessment at a public health facility, where additional tests were conducted and nutritional supplements were prescribed.
With consistent healthcare, improved nutrition, and ongoing guidance on feeding and care practices, the baby’s condition began to stabilise. Over time, she started gaining weight, her symptoms improved, and her overall well-being- strengthened. This progress was a powerful reminder of what timely support can achieve.
Beyond meeting immediate needs, our team also assisted the mother in securing vital documentation for herself and her child. Obtaining identity documents and a birth certificate was a significant milestone. It enabled the family to apply for a child support grant — an important step towards longer-term stability and independence.
This story highlights why prevention matters. Without intervention, the outcome could have been very different. Instead, through early support, access to healthcare, practical assistance, and compassionate accompaniment, a vulnerable family is now on a path towards greater stability.

At Give a Child a Family Africa, we believe that children belong in secure families. Strengthening families before crisis escalates is not only more effective — it protects children from unnecessary separation and creates sustainable change.
When communities, organisations, and supporters work together, hope is restored, dignity is upheld, and children are given the opportunity to grow up healthy and protected within their own families.
