GCF CHILDREN’S SERVICES ARCHIVE
Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC)
GCF can accommodate 60 children at any given time.
They are between the ages of 0-12 years, considering that some children have slightly older siblings, who would also be admitted so that the siblings can remain together.
Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) operating as a Temporary Safe Care Facility
Programme Description
GCF hosts a CYCC, specialising in temporary safe care.
Temporary safe care entails caring for children at a CYCC registered with the Department of Social Development, for a few days to some months where children are kept safe while awaiting a more permanent solution for their lives, and/or work is done with their families to see if they can be returned home
South Africa – Rest of Africa
Children are brought to the CYCC by case managers who work in the community or by police services.
All children are dealt with on an individual basis. A risk assessment is done on each child upon arrival
Every child has a Care Plan (CP) and an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that is updated throughout their placement at the CYCC. Â
The package of services rendered to the children is child-centred, evidence-based and responsive to the specific needs and opportunities of vulnerable children in the Ugu District.
The children are cared for in a healthy, hygienic and safe environment. They are provided with adequate nutritious meals and sleeping facilities.
Health Care Services are given to all children and therapeutic interventions to all children over the age of three.
The education or development programme is for all children, regardless of age and ability.
Family contact is maintained where allowed.
The residential social worker is responsible for the effective and efficient movement of the children of the centre.
Reunification with the biological family is always the number one priority, which is undertaken where work with the family is done as well as Parenting Skills training is included.
In cases where children cannot move back to their family of origin, they are mostly placed with other caring relatives or in foster care with a secure family on the GCF Foster Care database.
Problem Statement
There has been minimal progress in realising equality and improved outcomes for vulnerable children. As a result, South Africa has made limited progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in an aspect of children’s well-being, which entails surviving and thriving, learning, protection, environment and having a fair chance. It remains one of the most unequal countries in the world, where disparities continue along inter-generational equity fault lines.
Children are being violated in many ways, such as physical and sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment.
The number of child homicides is high and one in every three adolescents, both girls and boys, hasexperienced some form of sexual abuse during their lifetime.
