From Foster Care to Forever Families: A Heart-warming Goodbye

Apr 4, 2025 | blog

On a warm afternoon, we gathered at one of our foster mothers’ homes, nestled deep in a rural area where rolling green hills stretch far and wide, and cows and goats roam freely along the narrow roads. This meeting was special. After many years of walking together, it was time to officially close this particular foster care support group.

These incredible women have met regularly, sharing their journeys and supporting one another through the joys and challenges of foster parenting. Some of them received their foster children 20 years ago, and today, those children are adults, firmly rooted in their families. Some of them are studying at college and others are working. Only one of the foster mothers in the group still has a younger foster child in her care, and she will transition to another support group instead.

The stories shared that day were nothing short of inspiring. These mothers spoke with deep gratitude, reflecting on their experiences and the lives they helped nurture.

“When my daughter died, she left me with her daughter, who is the same age as my foster child,” one mother shared. “They grew up together, and I know it was God’s plan—both of them needed love and a mother.”

A recurring theme in their reflections was appreciation for Give a Child a Family Africa (GCF) and the foster care programme. They expressed how the training empowered them to be better parents—not only to their foster children but also to their biological children and grandchildren. The support groups gave them a sense of community, a space to learn, and the strength to navigate the complexities of raising children who had faced difficult pasts.

The women spoke with gratitude about the guidance and respect they always receive from GCF, especially during the tough moments when their children’s traumas surfaced in challenging behaviours.

Monica, our support group facilitator, also shared her heartfelt thanks. “From the first meeting, I felt embraced by you. I have learned so much from your wisdom as mothers and strong women of faith.”

And what better way to close this chapter than with cake, certificates of appreciation, and heartfelt singing and prayer? Though the official meetings may be ending, this was not a goodbye. The bonds formed over the years remain strong, and GCF will always be just a phone call away.

Foster parenting is not just about providing shelter; it’s about love, commitment, and family. And in this deep rural community, it is evident that family is forever.
