Introduction
If you’ve been following GCF’s journey, you’re likely aware of our Foster Care Programme—a vital initiative born from the recognition that children often spend too much time in Child and Youth Care Centres, missing out on the stability and love that a family environment provides. We believe that every child deserves a chance to experience the warmth of a loving family, the joys of community life, and the opportunities it brings.
In mid-May, GCF conducted a comprehensive five-day Foster Care training program for a dedicated group of potential foster parents who are progressing through our rigorous application process. But what exactly does this process entail? It may seem lengthy, but it’s designed to ensure that we find families where children will not only feel safe but also be nurtured and loved as every child should be.

The Foster Care Application Journey:
- Thorough Interviews: Our foster care team conducts in-depth interviews with everyone in your household. We want to understand your family dynamics and ensure that the child’s needs are met.
- Home Visits: Home visits are an essential part of the process. They allow us to assess your living environment and ensure it’s safe and suitable for a child.
- Documentation: Various documents are required to ensure the child’s safety, including background checks and other crucial paperwork.
- Foster Care Training: Prospective foster parents participate in our foster care training program. This training equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to provide the best care for a foster child.
Approval and Database Inclusion
Once you’ve successfully completed all the necessary steps, your family will be considered for inclusion in GCF’s Foster Care Database for approved families. It’s important to note that we can only place a child with families listed on this database when a social worker contacts us in need of a foster family for a specific child from one of the Child and Youth Care Centres in the area.

Matching and Bonding
At this stage, we carefully compare the child’s profile with the profiles of potential foster families to find the best match—one that we believe will meet the child’s unique needs. If all goes well, the child and the foster family have the opportunity to get to know each other, build strong bonds, and eventually live together, a process that is formalized through a court decision.
The Realities of Foster Parenting
Let’s be honest—being a foster parent is not easy. It’s far from a walk in the park. However, there are remarkable individuals, like those who participated in last week’s training, who willingly open their hearts to children from challenging backgrounds. They embrace change and understand that their family dynamics will forever be altered. Every member of the family plays a crucial role in a foster child’s journey towards healing, connection, and attachment.
Remember that children in foster care have had experiences that foster parents may not fully comprehend. They’ve been through trials that even social workers may not be aware of. Foster parenting can be emotionally draining, involving tough decisions and the possibility of saying goodbye to children who’ve become an integral part of their lives.
